Pictures can be so eloquent, can’t they? I had fun on holidays comparing examples of the Italian approach to risk with our own.

Panic Stations 21.6.2011

There’s an earlier-than-expected Laman Street Working Party (LSWP) meeting tomorrow at 5:30pm in the Mulubinba Room in the City Hall. It’s open to the public. There could be some deck chairs to rearrange – you should come.

Took No 2 child (who is less able to assert herself than No 1) for a walk to the boardwalk through Kooragang Wetlands last weekend and can recommend it on a number of levels, not least of which are that it’s flat and it’s free.

 I’ve been trying to work out for a year now what motivates a government body to doggedly plan (excuse the split infinitive) the removal of huge, stunning, loved and valuable trees. It seems similar questions are being asked in cities all over the world.

Years ago I had a friend who loved gliding and he convinced me to go on a joy flight.  I only went once because it was claustrophobic and nauseating but what I did learn from it, apart from the fact that you can have all that space around you and still feel penned in, is that there are Weather Things called Inversions and I assume that’s what we have today.

A spring day 21.9.2010

There was to be a briefing to councillors on ‘road and asset maintenance services’ at tonight’s council meeting. I was sorry I couldn’t make – the family will continue to need a mother sometimes and work will make demands on one: gets in the way of treehugging, I can tell you – it as I would have been interested to see if tree root pruning got a look-in. (See ‘Root pruning in Swan Street.’)

A friend dropped in to see me today and brought an East coast freetail bat with her that she is trying to nurse back to health. She may have a few more in the near future once the arborists, council officers and elected councillors get their way in Laman Street …

There are so many people who are cynical about council’s approach to Laman Street, because calling the trees dangerous doesn’t ring true with their instincts or experience.
