Fig Watch – see you at the guardpost 15.12.2011

What's more dangerous - loose sandstone on the Town Hall or the fig trees in Laman Street?

People on Laman Street were fantastic this week – gathering from dawn onwards and sending updates through the day.

Tomorrow the Lord Mayor’s dropping in to see the troops. We should all go to the last Council meeting of the year next week just to savour the fact that we may never have to look at their faces ever again we’re all about to have a summer break.

I heard that Santa’s coming to our Fig Christmas party on Sunday from 12 midday.

And while Laman Street campaigners have been branded as ratbags and loonies and unwashed and deliberately underemployed and the list goes on, Time magazine has named the protester as the Time person of the year.

I wouldn’t compare the risks taken in Newcastle with those in the Middle East and in the Occupy movement, but the theme is the same:

Loathing and anger at governments and their cronies became uncontainable and fed on itself,” Time’s cover article reads.
