Branch failure 25.3.2011

by

To add to the chaos around the construction site of the beige monstrosity of a shopping centre/unit complex in Newcastle West this morning there was a major Hill’s fig branch failure. This branch has been a disaster waiting to happen and makes Council’s mature tree audit system look either under-resourced or incompetent.

I assume this was natural and not some construction-related damage.

You only have to look at the length of the branch compared to the size of the tree’s crown to see how much longer it is compared to all the others. I always think major branch pruning looks disgusting but  it could in this case have avoided an opportunity for Council to say, ‘Look how dangerous these trees are.’

Fortunately our society is so car-dependent that foot traffic near this busy driveway is pretty minimal.

I’ll trawl through my fig photos and find a photo of how it used to look later today. Cheers. Home
