How many figs will be removed from Industrial Drive? 2.3.2011

by

This row of figs is on Industrial Drive in Mayfield and I hear a rumour that 6 of them are doomed so that a road can be built into a new development. Please feel free to correct me if this is not true.

I hear that originally more figs were to be taken out but that the number was reduced.

It’s beyond me why anyone would think it’s acceptable to remove perfectly healthy mature trees like this. Where is the imagination and creativity that solves a problem on a  difficult site? Where are our priorities?

It’s at the intersection of Vine Street and Industrial Drive. I assume the site has been ‘remediated’. After ?eight decades of steelmaking in the vicinity I imagine a few toxins were removed. I hear what came out of the river there was just appalling. When I was in primary school we were taken on a tour of the BHP site and the PR bloke proudly told us how many millions of dollars the company spent each year to reduce pollution. My parents were scathing when I parrotted this information at home.

And you should be scathing when you hear in the months to come the same old risk information roll off the tongues of people who know better in discussion of Laman Street’s fig trees.

I heard the tail-end of  radio story yesterday saying Council has been ‘inundated’ with submissions on Laman Street and the Civic draft design framework.

And on a moving note, here’s the inscription outside the Memorial Grove – the grove that every few years Council consultants suggest moving; the grove that was paid for by veterans and residents; the grove that contains the first Vietnam Veterans’ memorial in Australia and a Lone Pine tree:

HERE FIND QUIETNESS AND PEACE AND APPRECIATE THE CONSECRATED SERVICE TO HUMANITY OF ALL THOSE WHO ABANDONED SELF INTEREST FOR THE IDEAL OF FREEDOM IN OUR TIME.

And on a frivolous, happy note, here’s a picture from twitter of the happiest field mouse you will ever see. Home.
